Helischool - the virtual flightschool
Lesson 9 - Speed change
What is the difference between a heli and a planar-plane?
Right, he could brakes to a halt in the air, remain on the mark time and even fly backward.
The focus of today's exercise is to accelerate and brake.
We can fly backwards but avoided! Without simulator-preliminary practice there make certainly mincemeat ouf of your heli.
The aim of the exercise is to keep a certain altitude, shall we say 2 m, during the acceleration and braking maneuver.
So it looks at the beginning ... During acceleration, the heli will first try to fly in the level of the forward inclined rotor surface - so it search the way to the bottom. With full pitch we could oblige.
Once but after 2-3 seconds, the speed increased, the rotor starts to develop aerodynamic lift. The Heli, take his nose high and rising to the top away.
We compared with dosed nod.
Start in a height of 2m.
Short nod command and increase pitch at the same time. The heli will be faster and will also have to rise up. But when you now:
- Reduce the pitch as far as the heli don't rise up - it will be slowly again.
- With nod hold the nose down, that the heli don't rise up - it will continue to accelerate.
You hold it in your hand. Moment - we need to brake again!
For brakes, the nose lifted and the pitch so greatly reduced that it could not rise.
But with decreasing speed:
- Pitch must be admitted very strong
- The nose must be horizontally
Why is clear. The boostcoefficient of the rotor decrease to zero during braking. The helit has to hold his own height with much more power.
If we take the not nose not soon enough down, flies the heli after the standing backwards away.
Especially the braking maneuver (from great speed out it called also flaren) needed longer exercises, because at the start the heli mostly rise up or device in backward flight. (Then turn with 180° yaw the nose in the new direction and catch it.)

...after many exercises.
Tip:
During braking, you also hear the typically rattle of the rotorblades!
Don't worry - that's normally. Large helis brakes also while they fly in the wind. Give it a try.
