Helischool - the virtual flightschool

Lesson 4 - Hover with the heli

The first hopper is done, but it had nothing to do with the maiden flight. You can fly when you can hover. Why?

No landing without hover!

We learn to hover step by step.

  • Hold Height
  • Control pitch ad roll
  • Control tail
  • Hold position.

As a precautionary measure you think about, to hold the heli just over the "saving" ground?
Wrong!
Up to a height of about 1.5 x rotordiameter among the vads the heli hoved on his own air cushion, also called as ground-effect. This cushion is for he heli, as he would stand on one leg. He flounders most restless, then he trying times there. times out there.
You will be overwhelmed with the control.

A second factor is added. Your Heli turns its rotor right around. Thus blows the tail rotor to the torque balance also to the right. Result: The heli drives in horizontally rotor circle to the left. The Heli remains only for us, if he ever bended a bit to the right.

So, it stands right, slightly tilted to the right.

(see Reflex-Demo 'Try 1')

Prepare the heli, as in lesson 3, for fly.

The aim of this flight is, to hover in belt height and to balance the heli with the right control stick.

  • Place it with the nose in the wind.
  • Take 3-4m distance
  • Start the rotor and give pitch next to sashay.
  • Now you take the control about the movements of the heli - not vice versa.
  • You concentrate about the rotor circuit and the nose of the heli.
  • Give more pitch and bring the rotor quickly in belt height.
  • Disable immediately the back-drifting to the left with an short right-roll-command.
    (see Reflex-Demo 'Test Try 2')
  • Balance with the right stick. Correct with short 25 % amplitudes.
  • Immediately come back with the stick in middle positon, when the heli responded.

Nohow the heli must hurry up! He would always be faster and would raise up.

If the heli turns more then 45 degrees about them vertical axis, you should immediately displace the heli and re-adjust the yaw. You still not managed the lateral view. You must seen the heli always from behind!

Turn your body in the same direction as your heli.
If the heli slowly drift away, go quietly behind, to stay in the tail area.
With more then 10m distance, necessary deplace!

>> The Helischool congratulatest you on your first flight! <<

  • Make short flies, from 10-20 seconds durations.
  • Repeat this maneuver several battery charges.
  • Hover directly above distinctive soilmarks.
  • Extend the flight-times depending on your neural-energy ;-)

The total flight time of a battery is in this exercises about 9 minutes. You see the end of the flight time as a quickly incipient decrease of the power. To keep the heli in the air, you must give more pitch in shortly time and the rotor engine speed droped-out with high-gear audible. Do not hesitate with the immediate, clean landing. The heli creeps into its ground-effect and is difficult to control.
This act takes only 10 -15 seconds, with new batteries!

If on fully pitch is no tendence for take off, it is the right time to switch off. It may be that further emptying the BEC System stops and the rotor turns quickly away. Then we must stop waiting...

If you be certain and feel calm to handle the hoving, come to lesson 5

Help!

What should I do, if the heli become to fast? Good advice is expensive. The only thing, that I could imagine, is the following action. But please think about this, several times. Take your transmitter in your hand and move the control sticks!

Immediately displace would surely a roll over. Turn around the heli and let him fly to yourself make the situation worse. Up in the air, it is safer for the heli. Therefore:

Enter more pitch, to 5m height. Take the pitch back to the hove-position and fly the heli as a plane in a large circle around.

You need not longer controll the tail - it stays always back with little drive.  The height could always re-adjust with pitch. If you raise now the nose easily, the heli will get slowly and decrease at the same time.

However it always retained a bit forward drive. This tempo could be regulated with nod.

Thereby fly anymore a large circle around yourself.
If you feel, that the heli flies stable, take off some milimeter pitch and near you along the soin in forward drive. Land as a plane and push the both control stick by the first soil contact immediately aback (pitch on zero, nod backwards, so that the heli do not land on its nose)

One suggestion, if you could a bit hove, by Richard Mostböck:
Take the heli in the familiar tail-view and hove it backwards to you, also from a major distance. But slowly, please!  Otherwise turns the heli back to you!

If you doesn't feel capable to doing this or if you have no experience with the flying of models, please exit the instruction here and appeal to a real flight school in your area or an experienced helicopter pilot.

Good luck!
